Figure skating - ice dance

Marika Humphreys along with her ice dance partner and husband Vitaliy Baranov almost did not make the Olympics.

The British Olympic Association (BOA) excluded the pair from competing at the Salt Lake City Games after their disappointing finish at the 2001 World Championships.

But, after considering a written plea by the National Ice Skating Association (Nisa), the BOA reversed its original decision, citing "exceptional circumstances".

Humphreys had tried to get to the Olympics twice before and was delighted with a 15th position in the ice dance.

She was the youngest British ice dance champion at the age of 15, with former partner Justin Canning.
