Fiona MacDonald
Before gold in Utah, former world junior champion Fiona MacDonald had already come close to success since her senior competitive debut in 1999. The women's second player was just edged out of the medals at national, European and international level in 2000. She has had plenty of support in Salt Lake City from husband Ewan who competes for the GB men's team. They live in Inverness where Ewan, 26, is in the family insurance business and Fiona, 27, is an account manager. Both sets of parents have been in Utah cheering them on all the way. Fiona was born in Paisley and, as Fiona Brown, was world junior champion in 1993. She is an admirer of the late Sandra Schmirler, the Canadian skip who won Olympic gold in Nagano but succumbed to cancer less than two years later. Fiona was the youngest member of the gold-winning British team but she kept her nerve at critical moments.
