POST-WINTER OLYMPICS VERDICT:
Germany’s team chief Walther Troeger said at the conclusion of the Olympics: "We’ve managed to compensate for some disappointments with some surprises in several events."
Hilde Gerg was one of the disappointments.
After winning gold at Nagano, Gerg had had her leg rebuilt having broken her shin bone during a training run.
She won several speed races prior to the Olympics, hinting at a return to form, but when it came to the crunch she failed to finish on the podium.
She finished fourth in the downhill and fifth in the super-G.
Close, but not close enough for Herr Troeger, or Gerg.
