Shared gold is best solution
Torvill backs the decision to belatedly award Candian pair Jamie Sale and David Pelletier a gold medal
Sale and Pelletier are awarded gold at last
Former Olympic gold medalist and BBC pundit Jayne Torvill commends the decision to award Jamie Sale and David Pelletier joint gold along with Russia.

The decision to award the Canadian pair a gold medal without taking anything away from the Russian duo was the best thing that could have been done.

There have always been all sorts of stories and rumours of misconduct in the past but nobody has actually come forward and proved anything.

But I believe that in this case the judge actually did admit to some form manipulation.

Obviously they did have enough evidence to say, yes she did behave in the wrong way.

I think it is a good decision really because it would be very hard to just take the gold away from the Russians and give it to the Canadians.

It was the only fair way to resolve the situation and I am really pleased with the outcome.

But nevertherless, it does not mean that the judges should be allowed to get away with that sort of thing.

Now, technically on paper the Canadians are Olympic gold medalists, whether it is shared or not.

If you take the French judge out of the equation then four judges put the Canadians first and four put the Russians first, they are saying that they are both equal first and I think that is right.
