Ida becomes a hurricane again

Hurricane Ida is due to hit Mexico on Sunday night

The eleventh storm of the 2009 Atlantic hurricane season formed in the southwest Caribbean Sea on Wednesday, near to the coast of Nicaragua.

On Thursday it briefly became a hurricane, making landfall across Eastern Nicaragua, where it weakened to a tropical storm.

After bring heavy rain to Nicaragua and Honduras, Ida has re-emerged in the Caribbean Sea and strengthened to become a hurricane again.

Packing sustained wind speeds of 90mph (150km/h), Hurricane Ida is predicted to bring stormy conditions to Mexico's Yucatan peninsula on Sunday evening. Warnings have also been issued for western Cuba and the Cayman Islands.

Ida is currently a category 1 hurricane but could reach category 2 strength as it moves over warmer waters towards the southern US states.
