Socialist Labour Party
![]()
One of the key pledges of Arthur Scargill's Socialist Labour Party is a four-day working week.
The party formed in 1996 when Mr Scargill says Labour "abandoned any pretence of being a socialist party... and openly embraced capitalism". The SLP is putting up 114 candidates at the election.
He is vehemently opposed to the European Union, as "an exclusive capitalist club" and to the single currency. The party would not only pull out of the EU, it would disband Nato and end Britain's "slavish support" to US foreign policy. A nation led by Mr Scargill would abolish the monarchy and the House of Lords. Haven for refugees The party would end Britain's presence in Northern Ireland and lift the blockades against Cuba and Iraq.
He told BBC News Online that: "New Labour has proved a willing handmaiden to multinational corporations and bodies like the International Monetary Fund which preside over global poverty, illiteracy, disease, war and pollution." The party will be fielding 116 candidates across the country, including 12 in Scotland and 5 in Wales. |
