Labour is making five pledges for the next five years
Labour has used a five-point pledge card to unveil the main planks of its plans for a second term in office.

The pledges cover the key election battleground issues of the economy, health, schools, policing and help for families.

Labour says it shows the "dividing lines" between Labour and the Conservatives.

But the Conservatives have accused Labour of treating the electorate like "idiots" by pulling a stunt which had failed before.

And the Liberal Democrats argue the government has promised the extra doctors, nurses and teachers before and not delivered.

The pledges in full

The new pledge card makes these five promises for the next five years (words in bold as they appear on card):

  • Economic pledge - Mortgages as low as possible, low inflation and sound public finances "as we deliver economic stability not return the economy to Tory boom and bust".

  • Schools pledge - 10,000 extra teachers and higher standards in secondary schools "as we invest in our schools not make reckless tax cuts".

  • Health pledge - 20,000 extra nurses and 10,000 extra doctors in a reformed NHS "as we improve NHS care for all not push patients into paying for operations".

  • Crime pledge - 6,000 extra recruits to raise police numbers to their highest ever level "as we tackle drugs and crime not cut police funding".

  • Families pledge - Pensioners winter fuel payment retained, minimum wage rising to £4.20 "as we help hard working families not the privileged few".

The card says "thank you for helping us build the foundations", listing these five achievements:

  • Typical mortgage £1,200 less than under the Tories, inflation lowest for 30 years.

  • The best ever results in primary schools.

  • 17,000 extra nurses now in the NHS.

  • Crime down 10%

  • One million more people in work and new Children's Tax Credit.

It adds: "With your support, Britain can achieve so much more."

Labour will unveil its pledge card for Wales on Thursday.
