Americans are preparing to mark Barack Obama's inauguration.

He has already been sworn in at a more private ceremony inside the White House.

Today will all be about public spectacle, with some political purpose in his inauguration address.

But second terms are notoriously difficult, so what will his legacy be in four years' time, and what is the Obama agenda?

The BBC's North America editor Mark Mardell says: "There's little doubt in my mind that the Obama agenda is to make America a better place for its poorest citizens.

"He's not the socialist of some of his opponents' imagination, but he does believe that government is a helping hand...

"But the Obama strategy, that's a puzzle."
