The owner of the Currys and PC World electrical chains - Dixons Retail - has announced a big jump in sales over the Christmas period.
Sales in stores which have been open for at least a year rose by eight per cent in the 12 weeks to 5 January.
Sebastian James, the firm's chief executive, denied that the collapse of its biggest rival, Comet, in December had boosted the figures: "Comet, for the first few weeks of this period, were actually in clearance sale so it's too complicated to read."
"This Christmas was all about tablets - in the week running up to Christmas we were selling five tablets every second so it was quite hectic in the stores," he added.
