People in Chester le Street, County Durham, have voted to take a down a piece of public art which has fallen into disrepair.

The £300,000 steel arch will be taken down next month.

Jo Fairfax, the artist behind the sculpture, says that he is devastated by the decision as the piece was six years in the planning.

The council have been criticised for wasting public money.

Mr Fairfax told Today presenter James Naughtie: "I was asked to come up with an unusual design that wasn't the standard market place design."
