Petula Clark: Elvis Presley hit on me

Petula Clark has sold nearly 70m records worldwide and is one of the most successful British female artists of all time.

In a career spanning more than seven decades, she went from entertaining the troops during the Second World War to winning a Grammy for her biggest hit, Downtown.

In February, she will release Lost in You - an album featuring new tracks and cover versions of songs by some of her favourite artists including Elvis Presley, whom she met with fellow singer Karen Carpenter.

Speaking to the BBC's Rebecca Jones, Clark explained: "I was out with Karen Carpenter. We went to see him on a girly night out and were invited back to his dressing room and he took a look at us and decided 'yes'.

"I decided that maybe we should get out of there before things got too difficult to handle."
