The Guardian's regular Secret Footballer columnist gave the Today programme an account of what Christmas time was like in the world of the Premier League.
The player, who remains unnamed and whose contribution was voiced by a Today programme producer, said that he could not remember the last time he spent Christmas at home, but he generally spent the festive season "exerting as little energy as possible".
On the relationship between the coach and the players, he said that trust was the important factor for this time of year, adding that acts of goodwill - such as a few days off training - always came with strings attached.
