Stan Stennett: War soldiers put on great shows

A new play in the west end of London - Privates on Parade - will be nostalgic viewing for many people.

It is based on the way British soldiers have been entertaining overseas over the years.

Stan Stennett - comedian, actor and jazz musician who served who served in the Combined Services Entertainment Unit - told the Today programme: "They were great shows. We had singalongs, we had bits of jazz... the audience were wonderful."

Doreen Lawrence, an actress who served on The Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA), said: "It was rather a relief to get away from German bombs over London. Going across the Atlantic didn't seem too dangerous."
