Who sent the first text message and what did it say?

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the first SMS text message.

Speaking to the Today Programme's Sarah Montague, Neil Papworth - the phone engineer who sent the very first text from Vodafone's headquarters in Newbury - said that SMS was originally intended to be some kind of "executive pager".

Bryan Appleyard, Sunday Times journalist and cultural commentator, outlines how the technology has since changed society.
