'Why wasn't Cyril Smith prosecuted?'

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) says the former Liberal MP Cyril Smith should have been prosecuted for child abuse.

Police say Sir Cyril, a former MP for Rochdale, was a sex abuser of boys in the late 1960s.

Three times the then prosecuting authorities received information about Smith and three times they said they could or would do nothing.

Simon Danczuk, the Labour MP for Rochdale and has been pressing for a re-investigation, told Today presenter Justin Webb that, "There is no doubt that Cyril Smith seriously sexually abused young boys... why the CPS didn't prosecute more recently is puzzling."

"There are questions to be asked about why the prosecutions didn't take place... not just in the 60s, but in the 80s and the early 90s," he added.
