Paris gang rape puts focus on violence against women

Sexual abuse by gangs has produced some of the most high profile court cases of recent years in this the UK but that is also the case in parts of France where women's groups have called on President Hollande to hold a public debate on violence against women.

There was national outcry in France last month when defendants in a gang rape case were acquitted, or received what the French media called "light" sentences.

The Today programme's Zubeida Malik went to housing estates in the suburbs surrounding Paris where girls and women say they have been victims of gang rape.

One woman described her experience of a friend being raped: "We were waiting for ten minutes when the door opened… there was blood everywhere… there were two of them."

This report contains audio that some listeners may find distressing.
