Nate Silver's 'numbers game'

The New York Times blogger Nate Silver has been hailed as an unexpected star in the business of predicting who will win the US Presidential election.

He consistently backed Obama to win, much to the scorn of many on the right who thought it was a race too close to call.

Mr Silver relies on his own mathematical formula to crunch the numbers and reach a conclusion.

Marcus du Sautoy, professor of mathematics at New College, told Today presenter Evan Davis that he was "amazed there is so much hoo-hahover this".

"The election is a numbers game… and [this is] a victory of mathematics," he explained.
