The centre of the crisis in Syria is in its commercial hub - the city of Aleppo.
The BBC's Ian Pannell was one of the only Western journalists to witness the start of the battle in Aleppo at the beginning of July and has just returned to the city.
He spoke to one rebel commander there, Dr Abdul Raouf, who believes if the West does not intervene soon, extremist Islamist groups will become more powerful.
"We hope that the war in Syria finishes as soon as possible," he said, "because the more the war keeps going, the more jihadist and extremist groups will emerge in Syria."
