The Department for Transport has cancelled its decision to award the West Coast Main Line franchise to FirstGroup after it admitted that it got its numbers wrong in the bidding process and will re-run the competition.

Louise Ellman, chair of the Transport Select Committee, told Today presenter Sarah Montague that "this is a major problem for the West Coast Main Line but also for the franchise process".

Mrs Ellman explained that "three other further franchises have also been cancelled".

"I'm going to recall the secretary of state to the Transport Select Committee to answer questions," she added.
