On Boxing Day 1967, 15 million people tuned in to BBC One for the first screening of the Beatles' film Magical Mystery Tour.

They hated it - there were many complaints. An evening of light entertainment turned out to be hugely disappointing for many.

But the movie has been remastered and is going to be shown in full for the first time for 30 years on BBC Two on Saturday - accompanied by a documentary.

Anthony Wall, the series editor of Arena, told the Today programme that the film "broke the mould".

Mr Wall vividly remembers seeing it at the age of 14, when it was originally broadcast.

"I had my face about three inches from the television screen with the indoor ariel in one hand, thinking I was seeing something absolutely marvellous," he said.

Arena: Magical Mystery Tour Revisited , will be shown on BBC Two on Saturday 6 October at 21.45 BST.
