As fighting continues across Syria it is not always easy to understand what it is like for the Syrian people on the ground. The city of Aleppo, Syria's commercial centre, is a focal point of the battle, and Anthony Loyd from the Times newspaper has spent the past few days in the thick of the fight.
He told the Today programme that ongoing, heavy fighting in concentrated at the centre of the city, and although the bulk of the civilian population have "left the worst areas of fighting", casualties are still high.
He said that the situation in Aleppo is "being replicated elsewhere in Syria" and that people on the ground "like neither one side nor the other".
