Two-thirds of businesses surveyed by KPMG have said they are losing faith in the coalition's ability to put infrastructure spending plans into action.

£500 billion is needed to improve links to China upgrade the domestic road and rail networks among others - but the lack of any action to implement plans frustrated many leaders.

John Cridland, the Director General of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), told the Today programme the government needs to adopt a "sense of urgency" with regard to the plans.

He said: "If infrastructure development is to bring us out of economic difficulties and get the economy moving, we need to wind up the spring more quickly."
