Lisa Jardine: We need public opinion on 3-person IVF

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) starts its public consultation today on whether to allow three-person IVF.

That's a technique where the genetic material from a fertilised egg - the mother's and father's - is put into an egg from another woman.

It helps prevent certain medical conditions but means that the resulting child will have a tiny amount of DNA from the cell of the donor - what is known as mitochondrial DNA.

Prof Lisa Jardine is chair of the HFEA. She told the Today programme that it has already been proven that the science is safe, so what is important now is public opinion.
