Joan Bakewell: '1.4m over-65s drink too much'

Joan Bakewell, the government's former voice of older people, investigates the hidden problem of alcohol abuse in the over-65s.

She said she was surprised at "the scale of regular, steady, over-drinking by a large proportion of older people who are drinking more than they should."

And she was shocked to discover that alcohol is the reason for more hospital admissions in the over-65s, than in the 16 to 24-year-old age group.

Panorama: Old, Drunk and Disorderly? is broadcast on BBC One, Monday 10 September at 19:30 BST.
