TV soap cliffhangers 'are best'

Dallas is back on the box on Channel 5 and so is the art of the cliffhanger which it perfected. Dominic Trewdell, TV producer and former storyline producer on Eastenders and Julia Raeside, a Guardian journalist writing about television, examined the artform which every television soap opera is now using.

Ms. Raeside told the Today presenter John Humphrys that "soap operas do cliffhangers the best. But the way people watch TV has changed now. We record things and don't make an appointment with the sofa, adding, "all the modern technologies such as spoilers and the internet has made the cliffhanger difficult to achieve."

Mr. Trewdell explained: "The cliffhanger is there to make sure you that you don't go to the pub and stay in.

"The best cliffhangers are the ones tied into emotion and the moral dilemmas."
