The outgoing Director General of the BBC, Mark Thompson, is going to run one of the world's most influential newspaper groups, the New York Times.

Broadcasting consultant Steve Hewlett told the Today programme this would put him "toe to toe" with the NewsCorp boss as it was "well known that Rupert Murdoch's long term ambition is to either kill or buy the New York Times."

Mr Hewlett described Mr Thompson as a "formidable talent" but said that while working for the BBC he had not had to make a commercial return so it would be a "tall order" to take the New York Times into the digital world.
