The true cost of going for gold

How much does it cost, in terms of investment, to win a gold? And how much are different nations willing to pay to get them?

Prof David K Forrest, from the University of Salford, estimates that it would cost a nation, in British pounds, in the "tens of millions" to get an extra medal "that will be sustainable and part of the countries regular performance".
