India was rated the worst country in the G20, to be a woman, according to an international poll of gender experts, conducted by the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
Urvashi Butalia, who runs Zubaan, a feminist publishing house for women writers, told the BBC's Rajini Vaidyanathan in Delhi that there was a growing middle-class in India, which meant that women "access the public world much more".
She said: "They are now asking for a share of the pie which men have traditionally had, which creates considerable resentment, considerable anger."
