The government is set to spend billions of pounds upgrading railway lines, beginning with full electrification of the midland main line connecting London with the East Midlands and Sheffield.

Transport commentator Christian Wolmar has commended the government on the investment, which he branded a "political hot potato".

"All this is terribly good news," he told the Today programme. "This government has to be given credit for having supported the rail industry."
