The tallest building in Britain and in Western Europe, the Shard, is being inaugurated in London today.

The BBC's art editor Will Gompertz reports.

David Burney, commissioner of New York City's department of design and construction, believes it is a "beautiful object" but he says he has concerns on how it will "enliven streets".

Former mayor of London Ken Livingstone told the BBC Today programme the Shard is a "really beautiful building" that will "define London".
