A survey for the RSPCA has found that an overwhelming majority of farmers with animals sing to them or play them music or speech.
David Tory, a dairy farmer who chooses Planet Rock for his cows, says it is actually more to do with the fact that it "relaxes the person working with the cows".
Cows then become more relaxed if the person working with them is relaxed, he explains.
He told the Today programme that the better the welfare of the animal, "the more productive" the farm is.
