How can a mental health crisis be avoided?

How should the government tackle the growing demand for help from patients with mental health difficulties?

Conservative MP Nicky Morgan believes that most of the time earlier treatment would help.

Speaking to the Today programme she said that mental health needs to be "destigmatised" and "the care has to be there, it has to be clear where to go".

Chief constable of Leicestershire Simon Coles, believes there is an "inconsistency" in provision of places of safety, a "patchwork provision".

"I would hope that this debate helps us get upstream so we can avoid the point of crisis" he told John Humphrys.
