What was the significance of the balcony photograph conceived by Buckingham Palace as the last image of the Jubilee celebrations?

Robert Hazell, director of the Constitution Unit at University College, London, says the scene marks a change in the marketing of the royal family which is now focusing on the "core team".

William and Harry's coming of age "displaces other members of the royal family to the margins", he explains, and "in an age of austerity it is a sensible defensive move".
