The Daily Telegraph has reported that the sacked editors of the Daily and Sunday Mirror were making plans to take over the company, Trinity Mirror.
Roy Greenslade, media commentator and former editor of the Mirror, says he "not sure" the story is entirely true.
"Its complete nonsense" they were sacked because of plans to takeover the company, he told the Today programme.
The rumours come, he said, because Trinity Mirror is "in crisis" with "low morale" in the newsrooms.
