The head of International Airlines Group, Willie Walsh, has said that the government is misleading people about what he describes as a crisis on the border in UK airports.

"Anybody who has gone through an airport in recent times has experienced the unacceptable poor standards that the border force has provided," he told Today presenter John Humphrys.

"The government has tried to convince people that we don't have a crisis, the government is misleading people, we have a crisis, it has been there for some time and we need urgent action."

Immigration Minister Damian Green accepted that some delays had been too long, but said that appropriate action was being taken.

"We are taking significant steps to make sure that Border Force is more flexible so that we have the right people in the right place at the right time, and that is the way forward," he said.

"We are making it more secure than ever before."
