Peter Bergen, national security correspondent of CNN and author of Manhunt, told Today presenter Jim Naughtie that both US Vice President Joe Biden and Defence Secretary Robert Gates advised President Obama against the raid on the Al Qaeda leader's compound because a uncertainty over intelligence.
President Obama is a calculated risk taker, he said, who will "roll the dice" when he believes it is the right thing to do.
