French President Nicolas Sarkozy has got through to the second round of the presidential election.
He came second in the first round with 27% of the vote against his socialist rival Francois Hollande, who got 28%.
It is the first time a sitting president has lost in the first round.
But the surprise of the night was the strong showing for Marine Le Pen, the leader of the National Front, who got 18% - the best her party has ever done.
The BBC's Europe correspondent Chris Morris reports.
