Should the Lords move north?

The Labour peer Lord Adonis has suggested that the House of Lords should be moved outside of London to Manchester or Birmingham.

He was speaking after publishing a letter in the Spectator urging the move in order to challenge "the idea that the whole of political life of the country must revolve around London".

But Conservative peer and former newspaper editor Baroness Wheatcroft disagreed with the idea and said that parliament remains a single body.

"It is important for people to work together physically... and in the same place," she said.

"There does have to be a move out of London," she said, but it should be in terms of media and manufacturing.
