At least 55 people have been killed in Homs over the weekend in clashes between the Syrian authorities and protestors.

Reporting from the city, with sounds of mortar bombs and gun fire in the background, Paul Wood told Today presenter John Humphrys that most people are now hiding indoors.

The people of Homs now fear an imminent "invasion" by government ground forces, he said.

With Russia and China vetoing a UN resolution to end the violence in Syria, most people he has spoken to feel alone and "abandoned" by the outside world.
