Fighting the cold without central heating

What needs to be done to help elderly people get through the winter?

Reporter Nicola Stanbridge speaks to Nancy, a 89-year-old who is fighting the cold without the aid of central heating.

"I know I'm going to be alright," she says. By leaving the cooker on throughout the day, and taking part in community activities, she is concentrating "not only warmth in body, but warmth in mind".

Mervyn Kohler, an adviser to Age UK, said that in times like this it was important that society "pull up our socks" and watch out for the vulnerable people living around us.
