At the end of the month, former president General Pervez Musharraf plans to return to Pakistan in an attempt to resurrect his political career.
Mr Musharraf told the Today programme's Justin Webb that the pillars of state in Pakistan were "pulling in different directions".
"With the coming of elections" he said he would be "proactively trying to manage things in a better way", he explained.
"I'm going there for the mandate of the people" he said, adding that he was prepared to defend himself if a legal case was brought against him.
