Abbott tweet 'not a resigning issue'

MP Diane Abbott caused a storm on Twitter with her comments about a "white divide and rule agenda".

Diran Adebayo, an award winning novelist, says the shadow health spokesperson should not resign over the controversy. He explains that what she was doing with her tweet was "reversing a question" but she was "missing the point"

Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, columnist for the Independent, believes that kind of generalisation is "too easily done" on Twitter. She should have been careful, she adds, but agrees that it is not a resigning issue.

Clarification: Yasmin Ali-Brown says in this discussion that Joy Gardner was killed by immigration officers. Mrs Gardiner died after a struggle with three police officers who were all later acquitted of manslaughter.
