Painting the Forth Bridge 'finished'

The painting of the Forth Bridge is to end, but how can the English language survive without one of our favourite similes?

John Andrew, Business Development Director at Balfour Beatty, says that "modern technology" has enabled the painting to finally be completed after 10 years of work.

Mark Forsyth, author of the The Etymologicon, suggests "playing whac-a-mole", or even "baling out the eurozone" could replace the well worn phrase.
