Distressing accounts of elderly people being poorly treated by hospital staff have been published by the Patients Association.
The Association's Angela Rippon says that in some cases, patients are left dehydrated, malnourished and lying in their own faeces.
However, she points out that the majority of nurses show care and compassion and do an excellent job, but there are a few "rotten apples" damaging the reputation of the care system.
She adds that it is now vital that action is taken rather than new reports being commissioned, as "all the evidence is there".
