New Yorkers flee Hurricane Irene

New York is bracing itself for the onslaught of Hurricane Irene, the first hurricane to pass through the area in nearly three decades.

Around a quarter of a million residents in low-lying areas have been told to evacuate their homes.

The BBC's Steve Kingstone reports from a city "preparing for the worst".
