Number crunching

Odd or even? Prime or not? The choice is yours

Do you have a favourite number? Why did you choose it? And what does it say about you?

The maths writer Alex Bellos, author of Alex's Adventures in Numberland, has launched an online survey at www.favouritenumber.net asking people about their choices.

He says: "It's clear that many people do have very strong feelings about numbers - whether they think a number is good or bad, and which ones are their favourites or most hated. I started to become interested by what are our shared feelings about numbers. Most especially, what are people's favourite numbers and why?

"The more I asked around, the more curious I became by the answers I received. I thought it would be fascinating to conduct a survey asking people if the have a favourite and why."
