Pupil premium 'sends clear signal to schools'

A new draft admissions code for state schools in England is published today, designed to simplify the rules for awarding places. Academies and free schools, which are independent of local authority control, will be allowed for the first time to give priority to pupils from the poorest backgrounds.

Professor Anne West, director of the education research group at the LSE, analyses the potential take-up for the scheme.
