The coalition will "go on very successfully" following the election results, Foreign Secretary William Hague has said.

While the AV referendum had been the "most difficult moment" for the coalition so far, the success of both the Lib Dems and Conservatives would be judged "by the overall success" of the coalition over a five-year term.

Local election result is a "one year event in a five year government," he said and the political strategy would be "vindicated" by the final verdict on the coalition.
