Ed Miliband has said Labour should have held a referendum on AV while they were in power.
Outlining why he is in favour of AV, the Labour leader said AV would change Britain's political culture and mean politicians had to security a majority of the vote.
"Under the current system, we only have incentive to go into elections saying how much we hate each other," he told John Humphrys.
And the Labour leader added that AV would force politicians to "reach out" to the electorate.
