Essay is 'prose with a voice'

A new publishing venture is to be launched this month dedicated to revitalising the essay. But given the amount of space dedicated to columnists in newspapers and specialist magazines, does the essay really matter? Lucasta Miller, editorial director of Notting Hill Editions, and Sarah Blakewell, the writer and biographer of Montaigne, debate if there is any need for the essay.
